Modern medicine was developed with male physiology as the norm, which has influenced physicians’ and scientists’ understanding of human physiology. This has resulted in a range of differences between men and women in how they experience and interact with the world, including their health.
This explains why it is important to have a clearer definition of women’s health so we can prioritise NCDs and ensure systematic sex-specific and gender-specific approaches to the collection, analyses and reporting of health data (Exhibit 1).

A broadened definition of women’s health will also help us address other challenges faced by women across the world, such as the lack of adequate nutrition and poverty. These barriers can have a significant impact on women’s health and lead to negative outcomes, including premature death.
It is also important to acknowledge that there are a number of sex-related conditions that are not necessarily reproductive health related, including autoimmune diseases and migraines. These are among the conditions where researchers and physicians are recognizing that both subtle and major gender-related differences exist, and that treatments and therapies can differ in important ways.
